Is the society killing you?

How to change from being a Social Animal to an Independent Individual?
With the state of our government these days, the political and social chaos around and the uncertainties in the financial condition of the masses a lot of folks are questioning what they believe politically and morally is correct and that’s  what makes us an integral part of this society. My question digs a little deeper than that.

“We all are born free still remains a myth in today’s world where a child is not allowed to go and choose a path for himself, not allowed to stand-up for the thoughts he reasons out as right, but is tamed to bow down to whatever the society believes in.

An individual’s opinion matters the least while the orthodox and conventional norms of the community still dominate most of our actions. We grow up being taught a certain way to believe. We are expected to live our lives in a certain manner. There is innumerable divisions and discriminations, confines and limitations that are set upon us. It could be on the basis of our caste, religion, family, gender and other countless but pointless matters.
Does this way of forcing rules on us not defy the very definition of an ‘Independent Individual?

It’s not what I believe about others or anything else that matters at all in my life these days, it’s what I believe about myself that matters most. As a general rule, once you get past puberty, you are essentially on your own because the world is truly every man for himself. We all at some point of time in our life might have felt utterly helpless and miserable, for not being able to do what seems to be logically correct, what seems right to our conscience. Many a times you might have felt like shouting out your feelings and breaking away from this traditional, canonical methodologies and norms.

What you believe about yourself is very important. They aren’t written in stone and can change as the wind blows, but they should always be in place for you to lean on like a good neighbor. Of course it is easy to say but hard to put into practice. “Then who will bell the cat”, how would people get the inspiration and the courage to bring the change. How would they figure out what your personal tenets are? For once sit alone and think, for once be selfish for your own freedom and ask yourself:

1. What (not who) makes you happy?
2. What (not who) do you look forward to every morning when you wake up?
3. If the real world issues did not exist like money, politics or health insurance, how would you live your most authentic life?

4. Deep down, what do you think your purpose is?
5. Can you tell people who you are and what you stand for in a minute and a half?

How many of you truly know the answers to each of these questions? How many of you could think of one single answers without getting second thoughts about others? If you can, then you are an independent individual with a strong set of self-believes and courage to stand-up for them.

But if these questions make you think twice, then it is high time that you change from being a ‘Social Animal’ to being an ‘Independent Individual’
