Shooting Stars
“Wish upon a falling star
It’s not too late to change it all
This shooting star is your last hope
Wish for it to take you home
You should wish with all your might
As you gaze into the starry night”
Shooting stars are one of the many wonders of nature. They’ve been around from the beginning of time, even when a man couldn’t understand what they were. So naturally, a lot of interpretations were put forth to account for this beautiful phenomenon.
In Greece, it was said that the falling stars were the rising and falling human souls, while Jews and Christians believed them to be fallen angels and demons. Greek astronomer Ptolemy conjectured that the gods, out of boredom or curiosity sometimes, looked down from the heavens above, and stars sometimes slipped out of these gaps. The myth about wishes being granted when you’re looking at a star stemmed from this; as people believed that Gods tend to be more receptive when they’re already looking down at us from the sky.
What amazes me is that after so many centuries, this belief still continues to endure all the changes of time. Even after being scientifically proven that these “shooting stars” were actually broken little pieces of rock and dust which enter the atmosphere of Earth, heat up, glow and burn down, thousands of people still believe that wishing upon shooting stars will make their dreams come true.
And the funny thing is, the reason that this superstition is still around is that; in some way or the other, these wishes do come true. Confused? Let me explain. In simple words:
You are what you think. Our mind is more powerful than we could ever fathom. What we keep saying to ourselves is what inevitably happens, all because our belief in that is so strong. Our subconscious mind is a million times stronger than our conscious mind, which means that the stuff we subconsciously believe in, affects us more than the things we actually say out loud.
So when we are wishing on a falling star, somewhere at the back of our mind, there is a little voice that believes that what we're wishing for is going to come true. And once our belief is strong enough, nothing can stop us from achieving our dreams.
If we can believe that something falling from the sky can help us in achieving our wishes and dreams, then why can’t we believe in ourselves just as strongly? The shooting star is just a medium to strengthen our belief system; it is not doing the actual work of making our wishes come true. The only person who can do that is you. It's always been you. So stop thinking about the million things that could go wrong, have a little faith in yourself, and see what wonders start to happen in your life!
