 Food Innovation Global Mission

Indian civil society group Walk For Water has embarked on a partnership with the Italy based Future Food Institute for the Food Innovation Global Mission 2018 (FIGM18). The collaboration was announced at a Press Conference at Bologna, Italy, on the 10th of April.

The Food Innovation Global Mission is a comprehensive expedition to research and document the Future of Food and the 2nd edition will commence in May 2018. During FIGM18, 16 Master’s students and 4 coaches will visit 12 cities of food innovation in 10 countries to collect data, conduct interviews and research on four themes: scalable sustainability & circular systems; future of proteins; agro-innovation in smart cities; and food care & future of food service.
In a message of support Italian Minister Giovanni Umberto De Vito, of the General Direction Promotion of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, said that "Italy has an extraordinary agricultural and food heritage that - for the respect of traditions and territorial peculiarities, for the attention paid to the quality and sustainability of productions - is appreciated all over the world. The innovation applied to the agri-food sector, upstream and downstream of production processes, constitutes in this context an important lever to establish itself in foreign markets and to grow Italian companies internationally. Once again this year the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has given its patronage to the initiative called the Food Innovation Global Mission for the meritorious effort of the organizers to bring together the knowledge of the business world, research and training institutes in order to intercept new trends related to to the world of food and nutrition. Therefore, I wish to congratulate you on this initiative of the Food Innovation Program of Reggio Emilia."

The Future Food Institute (FFI), headquartered in Bologna, Italy, is a non-profit trust with international subsidiaries with a stated mission to build a more equitable food system. By enlightening world-class innovators across the value chain, FFI seeks to boost entrepreneurial potential and enrich agri-food expertise by collaborating with local communities, connecting global networks, conducting research, analyzing trends and testing solutions.

The 16 researchers are from the Food Innovation Program in Reggio Emilia (Italy) managed by FFI in partnership with Unimore (University of Modena and Reggio Emilia) and the Institute for the Future in Palo Alto (California). The program involves renowned lecturers and scientists from some of the world’s most esteemed universities, including Stanford University, Tongji, PolyU, Wageningen and UC Davis.

Welcoming the FIGM18, the Director of UNIDO ITPO Italy, the United Nations Agency for the Industrial Development of Developing Countries, Diana Battaggia, declared that "For a real inclusive and sustainable agri-food revolution for the benefit of developing countries, we need the courage of young innovators and the quality of ideas to bring lasting changes to developing countries, freeing the true potential of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development goals.
The researchers departing Italy for the Global Mission come from Belgium, South Africa, Egypt, Nigeria, the United States of America, Colombia, India, China, Jordan and the Philippines. They have been carefully selected due to their academic qualifications, professional achievements and personal motivation. They are engineers, food technologists, chemists, economists, young entrepreneurs, designers, chefs, agronomists, political scientists, international cooperation experts, food scientists and managers.

Their purpose is to promote excellence in food innovation sector and mitigate its impact on climate change, sustainability, sustainable and equal nutrition, zero hunger campaign, zero food waste campaign and to contribute to the global debate on the importance to adopt alternative agricultural and nutritional models which must be sustainable for a better future on the Earth.

Walk For Water will work with the team during the India leg in July and facilitate better understanding and innovation in sustainable management of food and water, two basic human needs that are intertwined. The entire mission will be animated by the "Future Food 4 Climate Change" campaign, which will feature hundreds of advocates and influencers all over the world, with the support of the Youth Climate Leaders Network, the most important "Climate Co-Lab "of young people of the world.
