India Looks To Nature On World Water Day

The theme for World Water Day 2018, observed yesterday, was ‘Nature for Water.’ Walk For Water collaborated with various organizations to explore how mankind can use nature to overcome the water challenges of the 21st century. The official World Water Day campaign, ‘The answer is in nature’ focused on the potential of nature-based solutions to solve the many different water challenges faced by humanity.

In Jammu & Kashmir, Walk For Water State Campaign Head Nadeem Qadri was the Guest Speaker at the Government Degree College, Phulwama. He stressed on the need for a conservation model for natural waterbodies including wetlands, rivers and lakes. In a heartening development, the participants pledged to be part of "Walk for Water" campaign for universal safe water access and expressed their desire to lead the "BLUE REVOLUTION" in the state.

In Assam, Walk For Water collaborated with the Sanctuary Nature Foundation programme Kids For Tigers (KFT), and the Green Guard Nature Organization to organize a series of observations in schools. Walk For Water State Campaign Head Smruti Sweta Samantray wrote a feature in the popular daily, The Sentinel, about the need for water conservation targeting school students.

At the Besseria HS School near Tezpur, teachers and students were addressed by KFT Point Teachers Manisha Goswami and Raju Borah. At the Silver Jubilee School in Tezpur, teachers and students were administered the Walk For Water Pledge followed by a token tree plantation. KFT Point Teacher Mallika Dutta interacted with the trainees at the Morning Assembly of the Teachers Training camp currently underway at the Besseria MV School.

At Dhekiajuli, KFT City Coordinator Abinash Handique elaborated on the theme 'Nature For Water' and administered the Water Pledge at the Rajabari ME School and the Rajiv Gandhi Memorial High School to the students, teachers and other staff.

At Kolkata, KFT Point Teacher Smitha Sarojakshan led the World Water day observance at the M.P. Birla Foundation H.S. School. The Water Pledge was administered to the students and faculty with the banner of the Kids For Tigers programme.

In Pune, Maharashtra State Campaign Head Colonel (retd.) Shashikant Dalvi was invited as the Chief Guest at the Sarthi Prathamik Vidyalaya and elaborated on “Conserving Water – What Students Can Do?” He also led a walk with the participation of nearly 700 students, staff and society members.

Karnataka State Campaign Head Sankalp Mohan Sharma was a panelist at the UN International Water Day 2018 celebration in Bengaluru with the Consul General of France Mr. Francois Gautier, the Consul General of Israel Ms. Dana Kursh, international water experts and activists.

At Hyderabad, several programs were organized with the participation of a large number of political leaders, bureaucrats, corporate leaders, celebrities, teachers, students and other stakeholders. The Water Pledge was administered at thousands of educational institutions, offices and other community groups all over the states of Telengana and Andhra Pradesh.

World Water Day was also observed by Walk For Water branches and supporters all over the country and across the globe. The underlying theme of the celebrations was the nature was the provider and humans must learn to conserve the natural ecosystems for ensuring adequate water availability for the progress of human civilization.
