Solarmobil, “Another Step Towards Clean Energy”
Solarmobil, the official Solar Car founded by the students of Manipal University.
“Have you ever achieved something which you can relish throughout your life? If yes then must have undergone what it takes, and if it happens in your life early it gives you the boost to achieve something bigger in life.”
The desire to achieve something with sincere efforts and sacrifice, students here at Manipal Academy of Higher Education’s workshop have achieved their cherished dream of inventing four-wheeled “Solarmobil”, (name of the vehicle), believed to be first of its kind in India.
Manipal Academy of Higher Education’s automobile workshop usually a quiet place filled with a dedicated group of engineering students working was in the limelight when the mobile was unveiled on the eve of engineering day earlier this year.
There have been vehicles designed keeping the environmental factor in mind and the theme behind this “Solarmobil” was no different. But the feature which made it a standout among them was a factor of “emission”. Group of young scientists working on it stressed the point that it has no emission or ‘zero emission’. A remarkable feat in a way.
“Solarmobil” project was the brainchild of our seniors, initiated in the year 2011 to lower the degradation caused by the vehicles running on fuel” a member of the project group disclosed. A dedicated group of individuals have been working on it with a share of sacrifices of academics, sleep, the free time he extended. There were moments when I felt that it should be abandoned when I found my academics getting affected and workload as a student was too much for me. However, the desire “to do something” didn’t let me abandon it, the volunteer recalled with ambition in his eyes.
Solarmobil though looking like a “turtle” famous for its eternity, provides the top speed of 60 km/ph. It’s a four seated with the solar panels weighing 35 kg. It doesn’t have an engine rather it runs on a motor powered by the solar panels. The expense of the project was borne by 13 sponsors Tata power solar, INDUTECH, MIT to name few. The expense of the entire project was estimated to be approximately 30 lakh.
Considering the environmental factor, this project can prove to be a boon if nurtured, in a country like India which according to reports receives 300 days of solar shine which is most. As a Science student, we were taught an important principle “Energy can neither be created nor destroyed, but can only be transformed”.
It is said that a journey of thousand miles begins with small steps, the revolution has begun and the invention of sola mobil is another step towards it. Let’s appeal together, let’s be heard, Let’s initiate the change, a positive change, a revolutionary one to harness the kindness of Sun to us.
We must realize the situation and of future and their circumstances in the coming years before it becomes too late. That’s our appeal, what’s yours?
