STORY OF A 16-YEAR-OLD

It was the 16th birthday of Aagam, a boy living in my neighbourhood. On 19th October 2017, he threw a birthday party in one of the renowned hotels in the city. After throwing enough cake balls on one another and having the delicious dinner with his friends, Aagam paid the bill and was about to leave the food that was going to be wasted grabbed his attention. He consulted his friend and ordered the waiter to pack the leftovers. Roaming in search of a needy, Aagam and his friend reached a slum and asked a lady there if she needed that food. The lady had a family, with about 10 members and the food was sufficient only for 6. Aagam again got back to the hotel, ordered enough food for 4 members, paid the amount and supplied it to the same lady. The smile on their face was precious, which motivated Aagam to keep helping the family.

Aagam recited the whole incident to his elder brother who suggested Aagam consult his remaining friends and form an organization whose main motive would be to help the needy. His brother acted as a mentor and made a group on WhatsApp named ‘Helping hands’ comprising of all his friends who wished to help. Undoubtedly, Aagam was a young kid and it was tough for him to convince his friends to help others. Most of them said- “We are too small to perform such work”. But he had seen the situation of an underprivileged section of the society and had an urge to keep that good work up. He didn’t quit. In fact, they were just 8 in the beginning. But as it is said that every little step matters.

Every Sunday, they started contributing 50Rs. from their pocket money to the organization fund. Others too were inspired by this nice work and gradually joined ‘Helping hands’. Now, they are a team of 25 and one or the other member of the organization keeps coming up with an innovative idea of utilizing the organization’s fund. Recently, they have distributed their unused sweaters to the kids of slum and have even planned to teach them in their vacations. Aagam has more become like an inspiration to the other kids of his age. Aagam could have given up since he didn’t get enough support from his friends in the beginning. But he never believed in getting scared of the situations, instead, he had the habit of making the most out of them. Hope he continues this pious work of serving people.
