YOUTH OF INDIA: DEMOGRAPHIC DIVIDEND OR DEMOGRAPHIC DISASTER

India has the youngest population in the world with more than 50 % of its population living below the age of 25 years and with aspirations, hopes, and credibility of becoming the superpower with youth leading the nation. On the other side out of 12 Million graduates from different colleges per year, only around 1.2 Million jobs are available in formal sector with no jobs for the rest which has created much distress and unemployment in the country and thus it creates fear in the minds of the people of demographic dividend turning into a demographic disaster.

India can be saved from the fate of demographic disaster by giving its attention to the issues like employment generation, vocational training, skill development, changing the attitudes, etc., When population of youth in a country is high then that country has always been on the edge in economic, social, political terms in comparison to other countries provided that government is able to provide employment to youth with vocational training and development of skills. When government fails to give attention to the youth then it causes a serious social impact on the youth. It results in an increment in suicidal rates, drug addiction, various mental health problems, hunger etc., which are the indications of demographic disaster.

Swami Vivekanand said to the youth that “This period of your time provides the suitable and favourable fields for the working out of this extremely important and most indispensable process in life”. But in India problem as of now is that the youth are not getting those suitable or favourable conditions which are the sine qua non for the success of life. And its impact is apparent from the socio-economic condition of India. Instead of soaring of economics, it is showing a downward trend. Employment generation is not picking up the pace; suicides are increasing, etc., which are the danger signs for India. But there is always a silver lining which Modi Government has shown and i.e. vision.

The government of India has started skill India Mission which aims to raise 500 Million skilled workforces by 2022. More than 28 Lakhs students have been trained under Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana. Start-up India, digital India, Pradhan Mantri Yuva Yojana have been launched by the government. These are all ambitious targets which have the only goal i.e. to make the youth of this country produces and thus enhance the productivity of individual as well as of the nation.

As Swami Vivekanand said that “the essence of true success is what you make of yourself.” The success of government will be called true success when it will be able to convert the ideal workforce into a productive workforce. And the success of youth will be called success when they will bring their entire focus on “success of life” and not “success in life” which means as Swamiji said that conduct of life that you develop, a character that you cultivate and type of person you become will fetch you the success of life. This is exactly the point where the youth of our country will decide whether they want a demographic dividend or demographic disaster.
